Edexcel/Pearson IGCSE in Global Citizenship

This was quite a popular exam for home educators to take until Edexcel dropped it from its list of available exams for UK exam centres. However, it is now back!

Assessment: 100% external assessment, although candidates must engage in a community project to be able to reflect on it in the exam.

This is the specification. Assessment is in the June examination series. There is one 2 1/2 hour paper.

From Edexcel:

Approach: a foundation for students wishing to progress to further study of humanities subjects, such as those which touch upon politics, economics or relate to global development. The curriculum is engaging and relevant and widens students’ knowledge of contemporary issues. It encourages them to reflect on what makes them a ‘global citizen’, and how their learning will develop their skills and knowledge within their local and national communities.

Through the content studied and assessment, students will engage in responding to issues and take part in the community project, which allows them to ‘engage’ with global society. This will enable them to take greater ownership and responsibility of the community activity to demonstrate active citizenship – improving others’ societies as well as their own.

Culturally sensitive themes are used throughout to build on knowledge and widen understanding of global and local issues affecting communities and societies.'

Comment from a parent

'The best thing about this exam was the ability to study it within a group of teens who undertook the community project as a team. Relating what they were learning to an international context and not a British one, broadened their outlook and fostered concern for issues concerning global poverty and governance.'
